Recently, Franziska from GEPA—a fair-trade pioneer—visited MEACCE to immerse herself in the lives of smallholder farmers who cultivate the cherished Arabica coffee beans.
Her visit took her beyond the fields and into the story of the Elgon Mothers Coffee initiative, where she witnessed firsthand the resilience of women reclaiming their rightful place in coffee production.
Franziska engaged with these women to learn how their journey began, the challenges they have overcome, and the transformative plans they are shaping for the future.
The Story of Elgon Mothers Coffee
In a community where cultural norms have historically marginalized women, MEACCE has championed change. Traditionally, women on Mt. Elgon were seen as dependents, denied access to land, and excluded from the financial benefits of coffee farming, despite contributing the bulk of the labor. This disparity sowed frustration and domestic discord, perpetuating cycles of inequality.
To break this chain, MEACCE introduced Elgon Mothers Coffee, an initiative that empowers women by providing them with fair recognition and economic benefits from their work. Through international marketing and an additional premium for women-grown coffee, this program has become a beacon of hope.
Franziska discovered how these efforts are reshaping lives. Women are not only earning from their labor but are also gaining access to affordable finance through their savings schemes, which they use for household improvements and personal growth. The initiative’s impact extends to family dynamics, as training under the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) has fostered collaboration between men and women, reducing domestic conflict and promoting harmony.

A Premium Taste with a Purpose
Elgon Mothers Coffee delivers more than just flavor. Whether central-processed natural or central-processed washed, every cup carries the rich aroma of Arabica beans and the inspiring story of women’s economic empowerment. By choosing this coffee, consumers contribute to sustainable farming practices and a movement uplifting Mt. Elgon communities.
Franziska’s visit underscored the importance of partnerships and the power of collective action. As she left, she carried with her the stories of these women, their dreams, and the transformative impact of MEACCE’s work.
